Leraren tevreden door slimmer werken

Volgens een onderzoek door Sectorbestuur Onderwijsarbeidsmarkt worden leraren blij wanneer ze hun werk op een slimme manier kunnen uitvoeren, bijvoorbeeld door de computer meer te gebruiken voor routineuze taken toepassing maar ook door betere organisatie van de klas. Dat lijkt een open deur, maar ik denk dat de meeste mensen versteld zouden staan als ze wisten hoe weinig ICT er in de klas gebruikt is tot nu toe, ook doordat dat niet zo eenvoudig in te passen viel. I'm speechless: Audeo will understand what someone WANTS to say, before they actually say it. Will this make speech recognition technology look old fashioned? The applications for this technology are too many to even brainstorm about. One disadvantage may be, though, the sight of people talking silently to themselves in the street.

Yahoo Embraces The Semantic Web

According to Techcrunch, Yahoo will start interpreting semantic information added to websites very soon. Yahoo being one of the big search engines, this will ensure that all those responsible for any web site that wants to be included in a meaningful way, will start adding semantic meta tags. Yahoo will be able to use these tags to understand the structure of the web site and will be able to present it in a way that makes more sense to us humans than the gobbledygook we sometimes are confronted with by search engines.

Of course this is not the same as semantic search, but it's a huge step forward towards actually being able to access and use the vast amount of knowledge that is now available on Internet.

Alweer een positieve toepassing van taal en spraaktechnologie. Iedereen die een nieuwe taal wil leren en perfectioneren, kan wel eens een hulpje gebruiken. En als je dat via de computer kunt doen, is dat nog praktischer. Dus hebben ze in Nijmegen een project gestart dat mensen helpt bij het verbeteren van hun uitspraak en taalgebruik.
Overigens denk ik zelf dat het wellicht een te ambiteus project is voor het budget dat ze kregen, maar wens ze wel succes want alleen zo maken we een stapje voorwaarts.

Taaltoets voor VU-studenten

"Eerstejaars studenten aan de Vrije Universiteit (VU) moeten verplicht een taaltoets doen. De studenten die zakken voor de toets moeten verplicht bijspijkeren en een nieuwe toets afleggen."

Een teken aan de wand of een goed moment om aan verbeteringen te gaan werken? Kunnen we deze trend, die dus nu ook bij de instroom van universiteiten merkbaar en (belangrijker) meetbaar is, kenteren? Ik denk zelf van wel, maar misschien is dat ook wel het optimisme dat ik als ouder nodig heb om mijn eigen kinderen het Nederlandse schoolsysteem in te sturen na een aantal jaar het Spaanse schoolsysteem te hebben meegemaakt.

I've been working in the combined fields of computer speech and language processing and customer service optimisation for a while now, mostly in the Internet area, but this is of course the max: a robot who attends to customers and shows them the way to your products, explains their qualities, gives demonstrations and fixes problems. Ok, I'm making up this last bit, but is it really that far-fetched if you read what this machine CAN do? This is what I call pushing the envelope.

PS Shame those automatic translators don't work yet, I would love to be able to read the original article on Nikkei.net but it's in Japanese.

Just wanted to draw attention to this great move by the EU. Only interesting to those who are into natural language technology, this means they finally have a "Corpus" or body to train and test their systems with. This is only comparable to what the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) recordings did for automatic speech recognition, which is much. Let's hope the language geeks can turn this raw material into pearls and we can all start enjoying the fruits.

Scholen en docenten keren zich af van de 1040 uren norm, aangezien er niet genoeg leerkrachten zijn om kwalitatief goed gebruik te maken van al die uren.
Beide kanten van de discussie over de urennorm hebben goede argumenten voorzover ik het begrijp. De overheid (en ouders van leerlingen) willen meer contacturen voor leerlingen om de kwaliteit van het onderwijs te verhogen en te waarborgen in onze kennismaatschappij. Ondertussen verzetten de scholen en leraren zich tegen de 'opvuluren' die geen waarde toevoegen.
Ik denk dat er geen perfecte oplossing is, ik geloof niet in een "silver bullet", maar wat als die leraren nou eens wat meer ondersteuning zouden hebben? De schaarste is aan leraren, niet aan methodes. Ik denk dan met name aan het toepassen van computerondersteund onderwijs in gebieden waar dat tot nu toe niet of weinig gebeurt, zoals het taalonderwijs. Dan kan dezelfde (schaarse) leerkracht meer leerlingen tegelijk "bedienen" zonder dat er kwaliteitsverlies optreedt. De leerling kan eindeloos veel oefenen (de computer is geduldig). Tenslotte kan de overheid net dat beetje meer bieden waar ouders om vragen zonder dat dit om een gigantische budgetvergroting vraagt.

LogMeIn Files for IPO: is remote support coming into maturity?

Today GigaOM reports on LogMeIn's filing for an IPO. This could mean any number of things of course, from operational cash needs, to founders wanting to cash out, to expansion into new markets. I guess we'll find out in the next few days.
However, what it means to me also, is that this company has the guts to claim that remote support has become a sector in itself (we knew already) worth investing in. We're not at the stage where the market is consolidating yet (despite what I thought last year when Cisco bought Webex). But, it's no longer just part of another suite of products, or is this IPO just a fluke? Let me know what you think about it.
